“Looking for the Spaces” is a group of recent paintings that continues the explorations of creating places that exist within, spaces to be found and considered - on flat surfaces as well as on three-dimensional forms.

The gallery was founded in 1971 in a Victoria-era flat in North Beach and initially collaborated with a Kyoto gallery and later directly with the artists. The focus was on contemporary Japanese conceptual art which was little known in the US at the time. Subsequent locations of the gallery were 871 Folsom Street until the earthquake of 1989, 251 Post Street from 1990-1998, 49 Geary from 1998-2009, 100 Montgomery Street until 2015, and currently 2180 Bryant Street.

In celebration of the de Young museum’s 125th anniversary, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are hosting “The de Young Open”, a juried community art exhibition of submissions by artists who live in the nine Bay Area counties. The 12,000-square-foot Herbst Exhibition Galleries is installed with 877 artworks by 762 Bay Area artists.

“Ever the Edge” is a group of recent paintings that explores the notion of infinity and connection within a place. The places are created as shapes and colors repeat, layer and move—forming elemental descriptions of what surrounds us and exists within our perception. Always aware of the edges and thinking of what lies beyond the edge (both literally and figuratively), Carole also extends the thought by painting on three-dimensional forms as a way to expand the edges literally: cubes with multiple, adjacent surfaces and cylinders with one continuous surface.

A special group exhibition of small art works by 12 gallery artists. The exhibition is comprised of works in a variety of mediums by Elisabeth Ajtay, Van Chang, Christel Dillbohner, Veronika Dobers, Carole Jeung, Theodora Varnay Jones, Judith Maloney, Trude Parkinson, Susanne Schossig, Dimitra  Skandali, Karin Wikstrom, and Eleanor Wood. 

The art works on view share a common approach of innovation but the similarities are less stylistic than intellectual. "Spring Selections" features works with a strong conceptual quality as a powerful force of attraction and influence that affects artist and viewer alike. In bringing together a diverse range of works by an international group the exhibition allows audiences to be exposed to strong artworks in a symbolic, thoughtful, and, at times surprising conversation that elevates beyond theme.

“48 Pillars” at Arc Gallery

"48 Pillars" was inspired by a chance encounter at Flax with a close-out sale of deep vertical panels, 48” x 12” x 1 5/8”. 24 local Bay Area artists will produce two companion pieces each on these identically sized panels that will exactly ring the gallery - 48 works total.

This is the second annual exhibition at Arc Gallery. It is essentially a “structural constraint” show, similar to our other “structural constraint” exhibition: the iconic annual, end of summer exhibition, FourSquared. In both exhibitions, the artists are unconstrained in subject matter except to the extent that works need to be a series; but they are constrained in format.

“Where Things Are” is a group of recent paintings by Carole Jeung that examines the placement of things and how the things which surround us define and create space. Some things are unavoidable and insistent. For her, some things are forgotten, only to be rediscovered. She thinks about what we keep, what we find, what we remember. These places are revealed through layering, repetition and color shifts.

The oil paintings in this exhibition were produced by Carole Jeung during the past 3 years. They are explorations of interior places and how one moves through them. She looks for connections and transitions, where things intersect and react, where parts are hidden and revealed, where the blurs exist. She thinks about how perceptions shift and change.

Jeung creates a sense of space on a flat surface by using simple forms and color to find what exists inside and in between. Layering and repetition (both of form and motion) give her a method of investigation and moments of true surprise. As the layers build she discovers spatial and color relationships and a structure emerges. These relationships then evolve and adapt over time as she adds and subtracts paint; some elements insist on staying or disappearing, and colors change. It becomes a balance between letting the materials determine what will happen and imposing control over them. The paintings take a long time to complete - they follow their own timeline until they feel settled.

Abstract, unavailable, almost decipherable textures emerge and recede in a terrain of images and color. The resulting paintings are charged zones, successive layers of the marked and the empty, color and space, surface and depth, explored and almost known. Carole Jeung received a BA from Stanford University and an MFA from California College of Arts and Crafts (CCA) where she is currently on the faculty.

Don Soker Contemporary Art, which began in 1971, is pleased to announce a move to a new space in the heart of San Francisco's Mission District. The location is in a century old warehouse/loft building occupied by 15 creative and tech businesses. It is at the corner of 20th and Bryant, close to several arts organizations and many restaurants. It is a 15-minute walk from either the 24th or 16th Street BART stations or the 22, 33, or 55 buses from 16th Street to the 27 at Bryant. 2 hour metered parking is not difficult. Please use the intercom at the door.

An opening exhibition will be held in two parts, the first with an artists' reception on Saturday July 11 from 2 to 6 will feature locally based gallery artists: Julie Alland, Tom Bills, Peter Boyer, Van Change, Jesse Gottesman, Robin Hill, Carole Jeung, Theodora Varnay Jones, Rose Ponting, Dimitra Skandali, and Blake Summers. This part will conclude August 1st. 

The second part will begin Saturday August 15th for artists who mostly are based outside the Bay Area: Christel Dillbohner, Susanne Schossig, Shoichi Seino, Gordon Senior, Judith Maloney, Victoria May, Tetsuya Noda, Eleanor Wood, and Yutaka Yoshinaga. It will conclude August 29th.
